    Originally named after the famous cocktail, julep strainers can be used to strain any kind of drink you need to make behind your bar. The convex/concave design allows them to fit easily inside mixing glasses or a pint glass when used with a Boston shaker.

    Wasn't this designed to scoop crushed ice into a julip cup and not for straining?

    BEST ANSWER: Hi Kent,

    Great question! The origin of the julep strainer was as a strainer spoon, used to scoop ice and also to strain drinks. One theory for the name is that they were used to serve mint juleps to keep the crushed ice and mint from hitting the drinkers lips. Today, a julep strainer is typically used when straining a cocktail from a mixing glass rather than a tin shaker simply because it's a better fit. Cheers!
